FAITH AND FEAR

What lies at the intersection of faith and fear? How does one influence, inform, strengthen or weaken the other? In this episode of Fear Less U, I talk with Blaze Davis, father, husband, creative, and Live Stream specialist at YouTube (as well as coffee & pizza connoissuer) about the relationship between faith and fear.

We talk about where Blaze gets his cool and unusual name from, and how his grandmother’s foresight into the man he was meant to become, encouraged him to embrace his destiny. We discuss how faith and fear are similar, and how you can use your fear to strengthen your faith. And later, Blaze shares with us his amazing story of being on YouTube campus when tragedy struck that fateful day, and how faith AND the fear of missing out moved him to action!

“That is what fear can do for you. Fear can actually make you better if you use it the correct way.”
HOW MY MOTHER TAUGHT ME THE IMPORTANCE OF
LETTING MY KIDS EXPERIENCE FEAR.
One of the most valuable lessons Eric learned from fear came when he was entering Columbia Union College as a freshman.  Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, Eric says that he was terrified to go away to college. This was mainly fostered by the fact that he was the first of three siblings to do so. He recalls that he felt like a fish out of water in every aspect – he wasn’t up on the latest fashion, his accent set him apart in his new Maryland surroundings, and having never left his home town before, he felt truly alone.

However, if it weren’t for his mother’s strength in allowing herself to let go and force him to leave home, he wouldn’t be in the position he’s in today. The best thing that could’ve happened to him was his mother allowing him to experience that fearful situation (Listen at 47:30).

“IN MY FEAR OF BEING ALONE, I LEARNED HOW TO BE ALONE.”
The most valuable lesson Eric learned in this experience was that seeing the world, even if it’s just in a different state, allows you to see your world differently. “A lot of people have a lot of talent within them, but they have super small dreams or a super small scope in which they see the world, which essentially makes them under achieve. Because if you have this big talent, but you have small vision, you’ll never fully achieve that big talent. I love my city, but coming to Maryland, one of the epicenters of politics in the world…the most valuable lesson I learned is that you’re a small piece of a much bigger picture. And what you do is bigger than you. And I think that taking away from that has allowed me to do things I never thought I would do in the last 5-6 years. I will be forever thankful to my mother for that.”
